BASIC SAFETY RULES FOR MOVING. PART #2

Lift with Care

If you’ve ever felt pain or tension in your waist while moving boxes, there’s a good chance it’s because you were lifting wrong. When you bend down to lift a box, push your waist back and bend your knees. This will assure that the weight will be sustained by your legs, and not by the waist, which is more prone to injuries. When you lift heavy items with your legs straight, the pressure from the weight falls on our waist. And that won’t be a pleasant injury to endure.

Rent the Right Equipment
Here are a few products you can use that will help you with your move:

  • Dollies: a great piece of equipment to help you move furniture and boxes
  • Straps: you can use these to lock the weight on the dolly
  • Gloves: they provide comfort to your fingers, give you a better grip, and prevent splinters
  • Furniture sliders: another tool that’s recommended to use during the process

Look out for Dangers
Look out for any conditions or pathways that put you in danger. For instance, if you have a slippery floor in one of your rooms or it happens to be a rainy day, you’ll have to be extra cautious. Rain can get mud in your house and cause a slippery path. To simply avoid this, examine ways to protect your floors or carpets when it’s North York moving. Look around the area for obstacles like low branches, uneven sidewalks, etc. and then note those spots for future reference. Check the weather forecast and be prepared with mops if rain or snow is expected. The most important thing, regarding this tip, is to be cautious.

Have an Emergency Kit Nearby
Nobody wants to think of anyone getting hurt during a move, but it’s good to be prepared. Make sure to have all the necessary stuff handy, like painkillers or band aids. Hopefully, and most likely, you won’t need them. But, as the saying goes ‘it’s better to have it and not need it” rather than vice versa. Make sure everyone knows where the emergency kit is located, which telephone to use for an emergency, and the list of emergency numbers to call.

Keep Kids and Pets away from Your Move
It’s simply unavoidable for small kids to be exposed to anything that could pose a threat to their safety, and pets could get hurt while you’re trying to move everything out. Find someone to take care of your pets and kids for the day.

Hire Movers
You may not be able to get out all the countless heavy items. In that case, hire a moving company storage to help you. Those heavy items you’ll struggle to lift put your health at more risk, so it’s better to trust the pros on this one. There may be appliances and furniture that need to be dismantled or disconnected before a move (dishwasher, for instance). If you’re not sure how to do it, look for the experts on this one. After all, your health is what really matters the most. Get a free quote here if you decide to hire a North York moving company.
